Welcome to Free Virginia.

What’s in a name?  Virginia is a small city in northeastern Minnesota of about  30,000 people (including the surrounding area).  It is a largely blue-collar community dependent largely on strip mining for iron ore.  It is in St. Louis County, which is the least churched county in Minnesota.  Only about 4% of the population is affiliated with an evangelical church and only 13% attend ANY church.

Jesus said, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)  We want Virginia to find spiritual freedom through the good news of Jesus Christ.  This region has been ravished by drug and alcohol abuse, broken marriages and families, and high suicide rates for decades.  We want to plant healthy churches that will bring the freedom from sin and death that only comes through the rule and reign of Jesus Christ!

In order to do this, we are partnering with the North Central District of the Evangelical Free Church of America.  Kevin and Kim Erickson, and their five children, have been called by God to plant a Free church in Virginia that will, by the grace of God, multiply healthy disciples of Jesus that will spread out to multiply healthy churches across the Iron Range.

So welcome to this site.  Look around and hopefully you can learn more about the spiritual needs of the Range and our vision for planting healthy churches.  We will continue to add links to other sources of information on the Gospel, church planting, and theology.  Finally, you can find information on how you can partner with us in reaching the Iron Range both financially and by praying for us.

  1. Kevin, this looks good.

I look forward to hearing more from Free Virginia!

  2. Praying for you and will promise to visit as often as we can.

  3. I don’t think there is 40,000 on the entire range Kevin.

    • I re-checked the demographic info I have and 40,000 probably is high, although that number came from some older projections. Actual “Quad Cities” population is probably closer to 30,000. Hibbing and Chisholm are probably close to 30,000 as well, depending on how far out you draw your boundary circle.
